Subject
COVID-19 tracking technology.
Significance
Based on experiences in China, South Korea and Singapore, several Western European governments are developing new technologies and using existing surveillance methods to manage the COVID-19 outbreak. The United Kingdom has announced similar plans for a new National Health Service (NHS) tracking app.
Impacts
The proliferation of COVID-19 apps increases the risk of users encountering unreliable apps and malware.
Longer term, governments may see medical research and public health information streams as strategically sensitive.
New market opportunities will open up for health apps for individual use and warning about outbreaks.
