Serbia’s supposed turn towards China.
Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic expressed Serbia’s gratitude to the EU for assistance during the COVID-19 crisis on April 10, while noting Belgrade had expected much more aid, much more quickly. His words rang hollow: a month earlier, faced with EU moves to stop the export of protective medical equipment, President Aleksandar Vucic had slammed the EU, calling European solidarity a “fairy tale” and claiming that only China could help against the coronavirus pandemic.
Serbia’s pivot towards China during the coronavirus pandemic will deepen already deepening relations.
China will expand its influence in an important foothold in the EU’s backyard.
Serbia remains a small country in the EU’s backyard and will need good relations with EU countries first and foremost.
