Significance
Former Vice President Joe Biden will formally become the party’s presidential candidate for the November 3 election, joined by Senator Kamala Harris (California) as running mate. Once the convention is complete, the Biden-Harris ticket will begin campaigning to defeat President Donald Trump.
Impacts
A Biden cabinet would need to accommodate centrist and progressive Democrats.
Biden would appoint technocrats to lead federal agencies.
Biden may be unwilling to relinquish some of the power accrued to the presidency under Trump.
Beijing and Moscow might seek to reset relations under Biden, choose to test his resolve early, or both.
