Significance
Outgoing President Martin Vizcarra’s impeachment was a response to congressional dissatisfaction with his government’s policies, especially those designed to root out corruption from public life. The new president has promised to maintain the election timetable, with presidential and congressional elections scheduled for April 11, 2021.
Impacts
Helped by high mineral prices, the economy will recover relatively quickly over the next six months.
Those who supported Merino’s takeover will not benefit electorally.
The new government will benefit from the drop in the intensity of the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru.
