Significance

So far, only few treatments have shown benefit in clinical trials. The complexity of the disease means a ‘one treatment for all’ drug may still be a long way away from discovery. Meanwhile, effective triaging of patients and symptomatic management will remain important as trials proceed and newer drugs are screened.

Impacts

Two or three effective treatments may emerge in a few months for hospitalised patients.

Treatments for mild symptoms may take longer to arrive and may be less relevant if vaccinations are effective at preventing disease.

Multicentre clinical trials may be useful in assessing the standard-of-care for patients across countries.
