Significance
The government knew that it lacked the legal basis for the cull and this has weakened its popularity. It has now agreed legislation, with the support of left-wing parties, to rectify this and to ban mink farming until 2022.
Impacts
The effective shutting down of Denmark’s mink industry will provide an opportunity for other countries to enhance their fur exports.
China, which has resumed the breeding of minks, will see an opportunity to strengthen its foothold in the Asian market.
The banning of fur farming across Europe could result in the rise of unregulated practices in countries which sell fur at lower costs.
The capacity of minks to spread a mutated version of COVID-19 will prompt greater research into the dangers posed by animals to humans.
