Significance
Biden will approach Latin America policy with more experience than any of his recent predecessors. However, he will face daunting domestic and foreign policy agendas and a Latin America facing the worst economic crisis since the 1930s. Expectations for sweeping policy shifts risk being exaggerated.
Impacts
Biden’s key Latin America team has not yet been named but can be expected to incorporate regional expertise.
Biden’s approach to the region will see a greater emphasis on diplomacy and multilateralism.
Damage to perceptions of the United States in Latin America has been considerable and will take time to repair.
