Significance
Street protests against the poor handling of COVID-19 last week called for the impeachment of President Mario Abdo Benitez (MAB), who sacked his health minister and two other cabinet members.
Impacts
Despite opposition divisions, MAB will remain weak and vulnerable to pressure from Cartes for the remainder of his term.
There are few prospects for bringing the pandemic under control in the near term, with cases and deaths set to increase.
Increased restrictions to combat rising cases would hit low-income sectors and would likely be widely disregarded.
