Significance
Although ahead of its peers in its own practice, Russian Railways lags behind even oil and gas producers for environmental performance because most of the freight it carries -- oil and coal -- is carbon-intensive.
Impacts
China will make more use of Russia as a rail transit route, directly or via Kazakhstan, diversifying freight composition.
A north-south rail connection via Azerbaijan and Iran will open up new freight routes to Gulf and Indian Ocean ports.
Freight transport between Russia and Turkey (via Georgia) is on the increase.
