Significance

The aim of the conference, attended by more than 120 heads of state and due to last until November 12, is to reinvigorate global efforts to tackle climate change. This will be a key challenge for Central America, which already suffers extreme weather events on a regular basis.

Impacts

Increasing frequency of extreme weather events in the region will highlight the need to adopt more climate change mitigation measures.

Neighbouring countries may seek to coordinate climate change strategies in order to maximise benefits.

A new marine protected area recently announced by Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador may foster further regional cooperation.

Green bonds will become more widely used within the region to raise funds for climate-related projects.
