Significance
Some senior Central-East European (CEE) politicians have made public statements essentially showing sympathy with Moscow and causing concern about divisions within the Euro-Atlantic alliance. However, Russia’s approach to Ukraine has prompted the allies to bond more tightly; the differences are between those supporting Ukraine and those valuing intra-member solidarity.
Impacts
NATO’s increased military presence in CEE will further irritate Moscow, directly going against one of Putin’s demands.
NATO reinforcements demonstrate the failure of Russia to coerce NATO to retrench in CEE.
Russian policy could reinforce US pressure on CEE states to increase defence spending.
