Significance

The deal gives Nepal access to USD500mn in development grants. Key players in the governing coalition were refusing to support Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on ratification, due to concerns over Nepali sovereignty, but they came round after an ‘interpretive declaration’ was attached to the agreement.

Impacts

Nepal’s relations with China will likely come under some strain.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) and Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist) will be increasingly divided.

Popular protests over the agreement will continue.
