Significance

Slovenia is entering elections in a state of heightened tension. The country is politically polarised between liberal-left and conservative camps. The most likely outcome is an unstable, centre-left coalition led by the insurgent Freedom Movement (GS) under the premiership of Robert Golob. However, a government led by the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) of current Prime Minister Janez Jansa remains a possibility.

Impacts

Indecisive elections imply the continuation of Slovenia’s recent history of weak and divided coalition government.

The election of a left-wing insurgent coalition poses some risk to existing market freedoms.

The demise of the current SDS-led government would improve Slovenia’s relations with the EU and United States.
