Significance
Unhappiness in Lebanon reflects the country’s rapid decline from middle-income to low-income status. The brain drain is depleting vital sectors of staff, although it does bring benefits in the shape of increased remittances that slow the rapid decline in living standards.
Impacts
Sectarian politics will result in important economic decisions being watered down and subject to delay.
Even if an economic rescue plan is successfully implemented, it will take years for human capital to be rebuilt.
Hezbollah’s, and by extension Iran’s, influence over Lebanon is also pushing many to leave the country.
