Significance

The offensive, still ongoing, follows a January 24 incident when rebels belonging to the secessionist Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) killed four government soldiers and captured seven others along the southern Gambian border. To date, Senegalese authorities claimed to have destroyed eight rebel bases and killed several rebels.

Impacts

Government subsidies will stabilise prices for some essential goods in the short term.

President Macky Sall will look to invest in upgrading Senegal's military capacities in response to growing regional threats.
