Significance
The issue of legalised abortion, which at one time cut across party divisions, is now almost totally polarised, with states controlled by Republicans preparing new restrictions while Democratic states vow to uphold existing rights.
Impacts
If the abortion issue increases the Democratic vote in November, it is most likely to be in races for state governor.
States that pass highly restrictive abortion legislation may see companies come under employee pressure to reduce investment.
Any federal legislation on abortion would require removal of the Senate filibuster rule, and this will remain very unlikely.
