A record number of people have declared their candidacies, with 15 names currently in contention, and more possibly to come. The frontrunners include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

Impacts

A choice of a nominee from outside the south-east may exacerbate separatist tensions in the region.

The party will likely pick up several governorship seats in 2023 possibly including Cross River, Ebonyi and Imo states.

The ruling All People's Congress's (APC) control of major state institutions will give them an advantage in next year's election.
