Significance
The CNT reduced the 39-month timetable announced on April 30 by junta leader Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya. Since the September 2021 military coup, Doumbouya has sought to resist pressure from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and domestic opposition to accelerate the political transition.
Impacts
Doumbouya's plans to stay longer in office raises counter coup risks in the medium term.
ECOWAS will reject any proposals to extend the transition beyond 18-24 months.
Guinea will prove more economically resilient against any ECOWAS sanctions than neighbouring Mali.
