Significance
By many metrics, this influence remains significantly less than that of Australia and New Zealand. However, the Solomon Islands’ conclusion of a security agreement with Beijing in April heralds a more challenging strategic environment for the US-aligned group of states.
Impacts
Chinese foreign policy goals in this region will likely be moderated following lack of success in obtaining a multilateral agreement.
Australia, New Zealand and possibly France will increase various types of engagement around the South Pacific to compete with China.
The United States and Australia will encourage more regional states to join the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, as Fiji already has.
