Subject
Prospects for African economies to end-2022.
Significance
Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy is expected to emerge relatively unscathed from Russia’s war on Ukraine: despite sharp downward revisions elsewhere, the IMF recently left Africa’s growth projection unchanged at 3.8% in 2022. This reflects the mitigating effect of surging commodity prices on the region’s overall prospects, offsetting the negative impacts of global and domestic inflation. However, whether this forecast will hold amid a rapidly worsening global economy is doubtful.
