Significance
The bill would make it easier for the government to amend, replace or repeal retained EU law, which is legislation that remained on the UK statute book after the United Kingdom formally left the EU in January 2021. The government plans to phase out up to 1,400 items of retained EU legislation by 2026.
Impacts
UK plans to adapt General Data Protection Regulation will be opposed by consumer and privacy activists, possibly in the courts.
Regulatory divergence would make it harder for EU-UK trade ties to deepen in the future.
Divergence over climate regulation could expose the United Kingdom to the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
