Significance
Washington says that it will intensify its assault on “significantly corrupt persons” in Paraguay. The statement has raised the spectre of further measures, including a US extradition request, against former President Horacio Cartes (2013-18), himself designated “significantly corrupt” in July. This would have a major impact on Paraguay’s economy and politics.
Impacts
US corruption allegations may serve to unite the divided Colorado Party.
Relations with the United States may deteriorate in the likely event that the Colorado Party retains power.
The opposition will struggle to maintain a united challenge with a single candidate.
