Significance
For nearly two decades, the region was administered as two provinces, Papua and West Papua (often referred to collectively as ‘Papua’ or ‘West Papua’). In July, Jakarta established three new provinces: Central Papua, Highland Papua and South Papua.
Impacts
Militants will likely step up attacks once Jakarta formally inaugurates the new provinces.
Non-Papuans working on local projects will be especially targeted by the rebels.
Raids on military and police posts by rebels in search of weapons will continue.
