Significance
All three are allies of President George Weah. Weah has suspended the individuals and called for an investigation. He faces calls from opposition political parties and civil society organisations to dismiss them outright. This comes at a time when Weah has backed a controversial reform of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).
Impacts
The sanctioned individuals will likely not be prosecuted due to their closeness to the presidency.
The sanctions will only have a limited impact on US-Liberian relations.
Domestic corruption prosecutions will disproportionately fall on opposition figures.
