Significance

Tensions between Algeria and Morocco have been rising over the past two years. Morocco's highly assertive foreign policy is coupled with an unstable political situation. In Algeria, changes in the foreign policy establishment have made it more hawkish on Western Sahara than it has been in recent years.

Impacts

Morocco will put pressure on Washington, Paris and Brussels for their support against Algeria.

Algeria will host the Arab League summit in November; to thwart Algerian influence, Mohammed VI plans to attend.

Ultimately, the status of Western Sahara and the conditions of Western Saharans will remain unchanged.
