Significance
The agreement covers the period to 2026, in which Washington will support Kurdish peshmerga forces with equipment and vehicles for Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State groups. The support is conditional, among other things, on progress with and eventual completion of a reform project involving unification of the two peshmerga forces.
Impacts
Slow process on peshmerga unification could weaken Western governments' interest in supporting the programme.
Washington will stay because of its war on Islamic State and its support for Iraqi Kurdistan against Iranian influence in Baghdad.
Iran and Turkey will attack Kurdish insurgent groups from their countries now based in Iraqi Kurdistan.
