Significance
Sunak's accession and his decision to keep Jeremy Hunt as chancellor has helped to restore market stability. However, the current economic situation leaves his government facing difficult policy choices that could undermine his support among the party and public.
Impacts
As in previous governments, the Conservative Party’s right-wing will have a significant influence over policy and stability.
In contrast with predecessors Truss and Johnson, Sunak will adopt a more conciliatory stance towards the governments of Wales and Scotland.
Sunak has a good chance of winning back voters in the south of England; retaining the support of poorer voters in the north is unlikely.
