Significance
Rising oil prices have boosted crude output, while subsidised programmes and a new gas pipeline are fuelling gas production. The current global energy crisis is also providing incentives to invest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants to take advantage of Vaca Muerta’s abundant gas resources.
Impacts
Governments will aim for a more friendly business environment for energy, maintaining sectoral exemptions and subsidies.
Rising energy production, exports and investments will help to reduce the fiscal and external imbalances.
New projects would boost regional economies, especially in Patagonia and the coast of Buenos Aires province.
Environmental concerns may diminish oil companies’ appetite for new investments in unconventional hydrocarbons.
