Significance
At the king’s behest, Anwar has assembled a unity government. The main partners to his Pakatan Harapan (PH) are three other coalitions: the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and, most notably, the Barisan Nasional (BN), a hitherto bitter rival.
Impacts
Anwar’s first key challenge will be to balance cabinet appointments among his new partners.
Malay Muslim politics will remain a strong force despite the PH’s multi-ethnic orientation.
Significant changes in foreign policy are unlikely.
