Significance
From November 21, private sector workers can now work four instead of five days per week as part of the federal government’s new Labour Deal. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said the change was a "beacon for an economy that is more innovative, sustainable and digital”.
Impacts
Industries unable to offer four-day weeks may struggle to attract and retain workers; the public sector risks may be adversely affected.
A four-day working week will help reverse some of the impacts of the 'great resignation' phenomenon.
The encouraging evidence from pilot schemes suggests many European countries will follow Belgium in reforming employment laws.
