Significance
According to the Warsaw-based Institute for Renewable Energy, Poland’s installed capacity in solar power is nearly 12 gigawatts, already exceeding the government’s 10-gigawatt projection for 2040. The government has also overseen large-scale projects in offshore wind implemented by national champions Polish Energy Group (PGE) and PKN Orlen.
Impacts
National energy companies will seek out partnerships with international businesses.
Lack of political support for renewables and high wholesale electricity prices will reduce Polish industry’s competitiveness.
Inflation driven by high energy prices will be at the centre of parliamentary elections in autumn 2023.
