Significance
The UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) is in danger of collapse. Various contributing countries are announcing withdrawals, including Western powers such as Germany and the United Kingdom. Frustrations with the military government in Bamako, along with long-standing doubts about whether MINUSMA can effectively fulfil its mandate, are driving the withdrawals.
Impacts
The likelihood of renewed rebellion in northern Mali would grow if MINUSMA withdraws.
Canada has been reducing its troop levels in recent years but upping its financial contributions, an approach other countries could copy.
African withdrawals from MINUSMA show Mali’s growing diplomatic isolation within West Africa and the continent as a whole.
