Significance
Possessing the world’s largest fertiliser company by market capitalisation and particular strength in the potash sector, Canada sees an opportunity to expand its market share as a result of sectoral disruption due to the war in Ukraine and the prospect that supply chains will be reconfigured away from authoritarian governments.
Impacts
The UN estimates 345 million people now face acute food insecurity in 82 countries, up from 135 million before COVID-19.
The war will continue to disrupt Ukrainian exports of sunflower oil and seeds, maize, wheat and other foods.
Food-related trade disruptions add to global inflationary pressures in food, fuel and the broader economy.
