Significance
On March 29 the entire group will meet virtually, to be followed by in-person meetings in the five co-hosting countries. Discussions will centre on multilateral initiatives to address global trends that threaten democracy and identify steps to fortify democratic institutions.
Impacts
Taiwan’s participation in the Summit will antagonise Beijing and lead to more rhetorical jousting with Washington.
Although the Summit holds democracy to be universal, the use of regional summits will highlight its varied origins.
As the Summit for Democracy is strongly associated with Biden, it is likely to be discontinued if a Republican wins in 2024.
