Significance
Khama, who has been in exile in South Africa since 2021, has dismissed the charges as politically motivated. Khama has had a turbulent relationship with his successor, President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who Khama accuses of pursuing a political vendetta against him.
Impacts
The judiciary, which has lately faced questions over its independence from the executive, will face scrutiny over how it handles the case.
The BDP could lose some of its strongholds in the next elections if Khama can campaign freely; it could even lose power.
Botswana’s reputation as a stable democracy will suffer as a result of the rivalry between Masisi and Khama.
