Significance
Allowing foreign universities to operate autonomously would represent an overhaul of India’s higher education system. Commitment to the idea is a notable feature of the National Education Policy (NEP) which Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government launched in 2020.
Impacts
Any moves by the Indian authorities which end up restricting academic freedom at the campuses would generate considerable tension.
Ensuring affordability for Indian students and fairness in admissions processes will be top priorities for all stakeholders.
Many foreign universities will continue existing partnerships with Indian institutions without establishing local campuses.
