Significance
Las Anod clan leaders declared in February they no longer recognise the sovereignty of Somaliland, which unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991, and wish the region to be administered by the Federal Government of Somalia.
Impacts
Delayed elections and deadly violence against protesters will hurt Somaliland’s quest for international recognition of its independence.
The crisis may end any immediate prospect of productive talks on cooperation between Somalia and Somaliland.
Other regions in Somaliland are unlikely to take similar actions, as the dynamics at play in Las Anod are relatively unique.
