Significance
Although the large hike reflects pandemic recovery, the 940,000 tourists arriving in the first two months also significantly exceed those recorded in the last ‘normal’ year of 2019, by almost 200,000. Tourism is a key area of focus for Amman’s new national economic strategy.
Impacts
The government will step up vocational training programmes for young Jordanians in the tourism sector.
Efforts to reduce bureaucratic blockages to new investment may face wider structural challenges.
The tourism authorities will prioritise improved data collection in order to target and monitor investments.
Spillover from regional conflicts or a domestic terrorist attack at a tourist site are the primary risks to the sector.
