Significance
Notably, OLA fighters on May 14 reportedly attacked a police station in Bishoftu, just 40 kilometres from Addis Ababa, while the OLA claims government forces have attacked its positions in several locations. The fighting comes despite recent peace talks between the two sides, which ended in early May without a breakthrough.
Impacts
Displacement and humanitarian needs may increase and could disrupt preparations for the farming season.
Security measures around Addis Ababa will likely intensify, constraining movement into and outside the capital.
An extensive deployment in Oromia could overstretch the army, which is already conducting operations to tackle insecurity in Amhara.
