Significance
The Taliban have outlawed the production, use and trafficking of all illicit drugs. The opium ban surprised many observers who doubted that the Taliban would risk the detrimental impact on the economy which the measure guarantees.
Impacts
Supply of heroin in neighbouring markets and Europe will be markedly reduced in the wake of the ban.
Farmers will increasingly look to NGOs and donors in the agricultural sector to help them switch to alternative products.
The Taliban may be more forthright in pursuing their policy agenda, emboldened by their implementation of the restrictions.
