Significance
The polls will be a major test for the ‘unity government’, whose two main coalitions are Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) and its erstwhile rival Barisan Nasional (BN). The opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition includes the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), the largest party in parliament’s lower house.
Impacts
Losses for the BN, as much as reversals for the PH, could undermine Anwar’s administration.
PAS will likely perform well in its strongholds, building on its successes at last year’s general election.
State governments with slim majorities will be susceptible to collapse as political volatility endures.
