Significance
Sportswashing, once the domain of pariah states hosting large sports events, has evolved to include sovereign investment in European and US sports. As these investments become more direct -- through state entities, rather than intermediaries -- sport is increasingly exposed to both geopolitical and macroeconomic risks.
Impacts
More cases are likely to be referred to the courts as sporting regulations fail to keep up with the new era.
More stringent regulations could be imposed to govern sports and to determine if foreign investments and owners should be permitted.
High-status ventures will attract negative attention by activists but that is unlikely to curtail investment.
