Significance

While the country has received record intakes of Venezuelans escaping the political and economic crisis there, net outflows of Colombians have risen since the end of COVID-19-related travel restrictions. The majority of nationals exiting Colombia are in the younger, economically active age groups, suggesting that, while some are driven out by insecurity, much of the emigration is probably economic.

Impacts

The political opposition may frame emigration as a sign of dissatisfaction with the government, ahead of October’s local elections.

Increased numbers of Colombians seeking asylum abroad could damage Colombia’s international image.

A lack of economic opportunities for people arriving from Venezuela may also be contributing to outflows from Colombia.
