Significance
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made certain comments about cross-border terrorism and territorial integrity that were widely perceived as barbs directed at fellow SCO members Pakistan and China, respectively. In September, India will host this year’s G20 summit.
Impacts
India will continue to use the various international groups of which it is a member as platforms to assert regional and global leadership.
Delhi will step up development assistance to Central Asia, even as its trade relations with the region lag because of lack of connectivity.
Relations with Moscow will remain solid, and India will keep importing Russian oil at discounted prices.
