Significance
The country’s economic crisis and the Christian community's demographic fears have increased anti-refugee sentiment, which politicians weaponised around the May 2022 elections. In April 2023, the army launched a major campaign of arrests and deportation, which humanitarian workers identified as the most severe since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
Impacts
Lebanon’s forced deportations could set a precedent for other refugee-weary host countries.
Fearful Syrians will step up efforts to cross the Mediterranean from Lebanon to Europe.
International institutions will negotiate with Beirut to target funds to reduce tensions by improving service delivery.
