Significance

Farmers in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) are demanding strong government support as they deal with droughts and the economic ripple effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Poland has threatened to take unilateral action should the EU fail to extend import restrictions.

Impacts

The ban could be extended beyond the current set of products: wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower seeds.

The easing of monetary policy in CEE and the weakening of national currencies could drive up input prices and adversely affect farmers.

Russian state propaganda will exploit the renewed restrictions to score points against Ukraine and the West.

Romania has concluded a bilateral agreement with Ukraine to facilitate the shipment of Ukrainian agricultural exports.
