Significance
Imamoglu wishes to run for state president in 2028, possibly facing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. His ambition to do so as leader of the main opposition People’s Republican Party (CHP), by ousting incumbent Kemal Kilicdaroglu, is stoking divisions within the opposition.
Impacts
Smaller conservative parties which have elected MPs by being on the CHP ticket may gravitate toward the AKP in parliament.
Kilicdaroglu and his inner circle have a vested interest in holding onto power within the CHP.
Imamoglu may run as an independent in the next presidential elections.
