Significance
Some 3 million people live around Lake Titicaca, which straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia and is the largest lake in South America. Many are heavily reliant on its waters to support livelihoods centred on subsistence fishing and agriculture, as well as tourism.
Impacts
The subsistence economy is likely to be further damaged due to food shortages.
There is an increased likelihood of more social unrest in Peru’s Puno region, an epicentre of the country’s recent protest wave.
Migration from rural areas to cities including Arequipa and Lima may increase as a result of the impact of drought and high temperatures.
Tensions between Bolivia and Peru, which jointly manage the lake watershed, may rise.
