Significance

This followed the violent repression on September 4 of anti-junta protests organised under the banner of the Vital Forces of Guinea (FVG) opposition alliance. The junta, led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, also recently arrested dozens of officers linked to the erstwhile Conde government, possibly in response to a coup threat.

Impacts

Doumbouya may try to cultivate US investors during his current trip to New York for the UN General Assembly meeting.

Mining sector growth may have only a limited impact on employment and improved livelihoods, which could fuel discontent.

Doumbouya’s coup-proofing measures may mean that any coup attempt could result in significant violence.
