Significance
China has provided low-key economic support for Russia so far, but overt military support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has not been forthcoming. Beijing has also resisted Moscow's attempts to close a deal to build the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline that would allow Russia to sell to China gas previously exported to Europe.
Impacts
Beijing’s desire to stabilise relations with Washington and Europe will prevent it from offering major assistance to Moscow.
Trade with Russia continue to grow, despite China’s stuttering economic performance.
Chinese direct investment in Russia remains modest and concentrated in energy-related sectors.
